Background
India is the only country in the world that has the most diverse languages. As per the 2011 Indian census, the number of mother tongues has totalled 19,569, making India home to the most extensive mother-tongue speaking country in the world. However, the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution lists 22 languages as registered languages. These are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. Hindi the national language of India and spoken by close to 700 million people.
What is Hindi
Hindi is a direct descendant of an early form of Vedic Sanskrit. Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian and most Indo-European languages. Sanskrit is the oldest language on this planet. Hindi is written in the script called Devanagari (देवनागरी, IAST: Devanāgarī) which is based on the ancient Brāhmī script used in the Indian subcontinent. The most ancient Hindu scriptures like Vedas, Upanishad, Itihasa (Ramayana and Mahabharat), Purana, and various other texts are written in the ancient language Sanskrit.
